Illinois Trauma Conference Set for Springfield

The most current information on traumatic injuries in the region as well as new and evolving treatment strategies is the focus of a conference for emergency medical service (EMS) providers and nurses to be held 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 25.

The first Illinois Trauma Conference will feature a series of presentations at the Illinois Building, Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield. It is presented by the Southern Illinois Trauma Center (SITC), with sponsorship by ARCH and Air Evac. SITC is a partnership of Memorial Medical Center, St. John's Hospital and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

The conference will feature Dr. Glenn Asaeda, medical director of the New York Fire Department, who will share his experiences in the disaster management of the World Trade Center tragedy. Other speakers will include nursing and EMS educators speaking on trauma assessment, shock, chest injuries and various related topics.

As part of the conference, there will be demonstrations of trauma rescue and stabilization techniques by ARCH Air Medical Service, the Air Evac Lifeteam, the Sangamon County Rescue Squad, Springfield Fire and Rescue, and Turris Mine and Coal Rescue Team. The afternoon sessions are a discussion of tactical rescue medicine followed by a demonstration by the Sangamon County SWAT team.

The registration fee of $25 includes lunch, a continental breakfast, all materials and continuing education credits for nurses and EMS providers. For more information, contact Laura at 545-5183 weekdays.
