SIU Med School Publishes 11th Annual SCOPE Magazine

The eleventh annual edition of SCOPE literary magazine has been published by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

Produced each year by SIU medical students, this edition of SCOPE contains 30 short stories, poems, drawings and photographs submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the School. The issue was introduced during a reading of selected excerpts in April at the medical school in Springfield.

Prizes were awarded to the top three entries in the categories of poetry, prose and visual art. The winners, judged by the editorial staff, received small monetary awards.

First-place poetry winner was Jeremy Anderson, clerical assistant in medical records for SIU Physicians & Surgeons in Springfield, for "To Safely Say." Second-place winner was Nancy Graves, a third-year medical student from Carbondale, for "Ode to Oedogonium." Third-place winner was Stacey Allison from Murphysboro, office systems specialist in Carbondale, for "To Catch a Breeze."

The first-place prose winner was Dr. Tony Miksanek, a 1980 graduate and family practice physician from Benton, for "Raining Stethoscopes." Second-place winner was Dr. John Grace, a 2000 graduate and psychiatry resident from Tampa, Fla., for "Lunch." Third-place winner was Dr. Stewart Massad, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of gynecologic oncology, for "Leon."

The first-place visual art award was presented to Dr. Craig Sweet, a 1985 graduate and reproductive endocrinologist from Ft. Myers, Fla., for his digital image "The Biologic Clock." Second-place winner was Anne Elliot, a second-year medical student from Springfield, for her digital photograph, "Colorado Moonrise," which was featured on the cover of this year's edition of SCOPE. Third-place winner was James Elliot, brother of Anne Elliot of Springfield, for his etching "Staff of Aesculapius."

The People's Choice Award for visual art was presented to Dr. Peter Somers, Ph.D., a 2000 graduate and a family practice physician from DeSoto, Ill., for his digital photograph, "Abstract Arch."

Shalandra Ross, a second-year medical student from Chicago, and Julie Lewis, a second-year medical student from Lockport, served as editors-in-chief of SCOPE. The editorial team included Bryan Kellenberger, a first-year student from Towanda, and Mary Beth Thake, a first-year student from Bloomington, associate editors; Anne Elliott, layout editor; Amar Chadaga, a third-year student from Carterville, and Loretta Scism, a fourth-year student from Harrisburg, poetry/prose editors; Amber Knight, a second-year student from Bloomington, art editor; Mukta Pant, a second-year student from Hoffman Estates, distribution editor; and Faisel Ahmad, a second-year student from Murphysboro, review editor. Staff editors are Karen Carlson, publications coordinator, and Jim Hawker, photographer. Faculty advisors are Phillip Davis, Ph.D., associate professor of medical humanities in Springfield, and Jacqueline Scolari, Ph.D., assistant professor in curriculum affairs in Carbondale.
