Med School Expands Public Resources on Internet Homepage

Three updates to the homepage for Southern Illinois University School of Medicine are making more resources available to the public who use the Internet to access medical and health information as well as health care services. All of the links are available from the School's main homepage, www.siumed.edu.

The medical school's physician practice, SIU Physicians & Surgeons (P&S), has added 180 links to the medical specialty areas for each of its physician faculty. For each of the specialty medical areas listed, from bone health to women's health, links are provided for reliable national sites such as the National Headache Foundation (www.headaches.org), the American Academy of Pediatrics (www.aap.org) and the National Women's Health Information Center (www.4woman.gov). The site (www.siumed.edu/physurg) has other useful resource information including a list of all SIU physician faculty (including education, training and expertise), the School's specialty and primary care clinics, various phone numbers including those for appointments, maps, and the research clinical trials currently open to patients.

The School's Office of Public Affairs has a news and information site (www.siumed.edu/news) with a variety of information available to the public including press releases about news from the medical school and a weekly radio health series, both developed for the news media. The School's events calendar lists public and medical related activities. Other information posted includes maps and directions as well as quarterly statistics. On-line requests also can be made for tours of the medical school and speakers for community talks.

The SIU Cancer Institute, which is focusing the medical school's downstate efforts in cancer research, physician and public education, and treatment for patients, is developing a site, which will be fully functional in early April (www.siumed.edu/cancer). The page includes a listing of clinical trials for cancer treatment currently open to patients. The site will continue to be developed in the coming months. (Note -- This web page is best viewed with Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 7 and higher.)
