SIU Med School Recruiting Patients for Tinnitus Study

Patients are being recruited by the Division of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as part of a clinical trial for the treatment of tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. This study is evaluating the efficacy and safety of gabapentin on the sensation and impact of tinnitus.

"We're hoping the results of the study pave the way for more relief for tinnitus sufferers," said Dr. Carol Bauer, associate professor of otolaryngology at SIU, who is directing the study.

To be eligible for the study, patients must be between the ages of 18 and 70 and have tinnitus that has been present and bothersome for at least a year. Each participant will be evaluated eight times during the 20-week study period. There is no charge to the participants for the tests and medications related to the study. Results will be shared with the participant's personal physician.

If you are interested in participating in the study, call Bauer at 217-545-5140 or 217-545-6150 or e-mail her at cbauer@siumed.edu .
