Two SIU School of Medicine faculty have recently received professional honors –

Donald Biggerstaff is the 2004 recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor award given to an individual by the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI). The award honors a professional member whose life, work and accomplishments have significantly contributed to the profession and to fellow illustrators. The award was presented during the AMI’s annual meeting at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Biggerstaff, professor of surgery, is director of the SIU Plastic Surgery Institute. He came to the School in 1973 as chief of medical illustration and instructor of medical education and plastic surgery. He became director of biomedical communications in 1979 and attained the rank of professor in 1989. Biggerstaff earned his master’s and bachelor’s in medical illustration at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta (1970, 1969).

Dr. John R. Fisk, professor of surgery, was elected vice-president of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics during their triennial meeting in Hong Kong. He also was appointed chair of the triennial congress committee, which is planning the group’s next meeting in Montreal in 2007. In addition, Fisk has been appointed chair of the medical advisory board of the Division of Specialized Care for Children for the State of Illinois.

Fisk joined the SIU faculty in 1990. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Minnesota (1974) and earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1969). He earned his bachelor’s at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, (1965). Fisk is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (1976).
