SIU Med School Sponsors German Ethnic Heritage Day

An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring German culture will be held Tuesday, October 19, at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The event will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of the School’s main building at 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield.

The program includes short talks by Chuck Martin, Gisela Motzkus and Edith Baunhardt, members of DANK, the German American National Congress; selected readings by Anna Marie Fuhrig, author of Stories of Americans Who Came from Germany: 400 Years of Germans in America; and German songs performed by students of Donna Treece, German teacher at Springfield High School. There also will be cultural displays and artifacts as well as tasting of German foods.

Ethnic Heritage Day celebrations are held monthly to share information about various ethnic cultures. The events are organized by the SIU Diversity, Multicultural and Minority Affairs office.
