SIU Med School Offers Weight Control Program

A 10-week weight loss program, Losing to Win, is being offered this winter in Springfield by the Department of Internal Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

The program is designed for people who need to lose 25 to 100 pounds. It focuses on making healthy lifestyle choices including moderate exercise and choosing nutritious food with fewer calories. The class includes an individual weigh-in time followed by a group class conducted by a registered dietitian. There are no special foods, vitamins, drugs or equipment to buy.

The introductory meeting for Losing to Win will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, January 24, in the School's South Auditorium, 801 N. Rutledge (second floor). Those interested are encouraged to attend the free orientation session, which explains program details, including class fees and application forms, and the first recommendations to start losing weight. The 10 weekly sessions will begin Monday, January 31, at the SIU Clinics at 751 N. Rutledge (second floor), Springfield. Sessions are tentatively planned for the noon hour and after work, depending on demand.

Free parking is available north of the 801 building for the orientation and in the Baylis-SIU Clinics parking garage for the regular classes.

For more information, contact the class instructor, Amy Olson, R.D., at 545-7985 weekdays. Details also are posted on the program's website at www.siumed.edu/medicine/endocrinology/losingtowin.htm
