SIU Med School Publishes 12th Annual SCOPE Magazine The twelfth annual edition of SCOPE literary magazine has been published by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Produced each year by SIU medical students, this edition of SCOPE contains 29 short stories, poems, drawings and photographs submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the School. The issue was introduced during a reading of the best works in April at the medical school in Springfield. Prizes were awarded to the top three entries in the categories of poetry, prose and visual art. The winners, judged by the editorial staff, received small monetary awards. First-place poetry winner was Sandra L. Shea, Ph.D., associate professor of family and community medicine in Carbondale, for "Whose Universe?" Second-place winner was Dr. Hope Baluh, a 1983 graduate and surgeon in Tahlequah, Okla., for "The Interview." Third-place winner was Shalandra Ross, a third-year medical student from Chicago, for "Wedding Vows." The first-place prose winner was Dr. John Grace, a 2000 graduate and psychiatrist from Crystal River, Fla., for "Renting Julia." Second-place winner was Dr. Stewart Massad, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of gynecologic oncology for "The Abortionist." Third-place winner was Sonya Koo, a third-year medical student from Danville, for "Five Minutes." The first-place visual art award was presented to Dr. Tom Ala, associate professor of neurology for his photograph "Aspen Leaf in Ice," which was featured on the cover of this year's edition of SCOPE. Second-place winner was, Dr. Amanda M. Wood LaPage, a 2003 graduate and emergency medicine resident from St. Louis, for her photograph "Boston Alley." Third-place winner was Koo, for her pastel drawing "Dad." The People's Choice Award for visual art was presented to Nicki Alami, third-year medical student from Lake Bluff, for her composite photograph, "Doubt." Brian Kellenberger, a second-year medical student from Towanda, and Mary Beth Thake, a second-year medical student from Bloomington, served as editors-in-chief of SCOPE. The editorial team included Ben Cady, a first-year medical student from Hillsboro, and Blaine Eubanks, a first-year medical student from Eldorado, associate editors; and Anne Elliott, a third-year medical student from Springfield, and Gregg Sydow, a second-year medical student from Brimfield, layout editors. The following members of the editorial team are second-year medical students: Alan Siroy from Shelbyville, poetry/prose editor; Sherry Williams from Bethany, art editor; Emily Young from Cissna Park, review editor; Laura Mendyk from Riverside, publicity editor; and Adam Reid from Carlinville and Mick Sullivan from Decatur, symposium coordinators. Staff editors are Karen Carlson, publications coordinator, and Jim Hawker, photographer, both in external and health affairs, and web editor is Jean Afflerbach, computer information specialist in education and curriculum. Faculty advisors are Phillip Davis, Ph.D., associate professor of medical humanities in Springfield, and Jacqueline Scolari, Ph.D., director of the medical resource center in Carbondale.
