SIU Med School's Annual Cancer Symposium Offers Updates by Experts

The sixth annual cancer symposium, sponsored by the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine, will feature national and local experts providing updates to the medical attendees. It will be presented in February by SIU School of Medicine and jointly sponsored with St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center.

The program, "Caring for the Patient with Cancer," will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, February 10, at the James T. Dove, M.D. Conference Center, Prairie Heart Institute, 619 E. Mason, Springfield.

Four experts will join four SIU faculty members in presenting the daylong program. The two keynote speakers (and their speaking times) are -

  • James R. Marshall, Ph.D., senior vice president and chair of cancer prevention and population sciences at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. (8:45 a.m.); and
  • Dr. Martin N. Raber, clinical professor of medical oncology and special advisor to the cancer medicine fellowship program at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston (1 p.m.).

The course is directed by Dr. K. Thomas Robbins, director of the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute. The course meets the requirements for 6.25 hours of credit in Category 1 of the AMA Physicians Recognition Award through SIU. The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute is focusing SIU's efforts in cancer research, physician and public education, and treatment for patients from across central and southern Illinois. More than 55 SIU physician and basic science faculty are involved with the Institute.
