SIU Cancer Institute Offers Talk by Cancer Physician/Patient

A public education program for cancer patients and survivors is being offered in February by the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine.

“A Physician’s Own Experience with Cancer” will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 9, at the Wedeberg Conference Center, Memorial Medical Center, 701 N. 1 st Street, Springfield. The presentation is jointly sponsored by Memorial Medical Center, St. John’s Hospital and SIU School of Medicine.

Dr. Martin N. Raber, professor of medical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, will discuss his own experience in dealing with cancer. Raber also is one of the keynote speakers for SIU’s sixth annual cancer symposium for physicians and health professionals on Friday, February 10, at the James T. Dove M.D. Conference Center, Prairie Heart Institute, 619 E. Mason, Springfield.

The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute is focusing SIU’s efforts in cancer research, physician and public education, and treatment for patients from across central and southern Illinois. More than 55 SIU physician and basic science faculty are involved with the Institute.

The program also has received support from National City Bank. There is no charge for the program, but registration is encouraged. Contact SIU’s Continuing Medical Education Office, 545-7711 weekdays.
