SIU Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Night

Type 1 diabetes is the topic of a public education program to be presented this month by the endocrinology division at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. It will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 16, at the Wedeberg Conference Center, Memorial Medical Center, 701 N. First St., Springfield.

The program will provide general information about type 1 diabetes as well as products and services available.

The exhibits begin at 5:30 p.m. and include diabetic products such as glucose meters and insulin pumps as well as some new medications. The sessions follow at 6:30 p.m. with four talks, "Insulin and Other Medicines" and "Resources You Can Use at Home," by Brenda Michel, Ed.D., R.N., diabetes nurse educator at SIU, followed by "Carb Counting" and "Insulin Pumps," by Amy Olson, R.N., C.D.E., diabetes nutrition educator at SIU.

The program is free to the public, but registration is encouraged. Parking is available in the visitor lots located east and south of the hospital’s main entrance. To register, call Ann Collins, SIU School of Medicine at 545-8065, weekdays.
