SIU Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Night Type 1 diabetes is the topic of a public education program to be presented this month in Springfield by the endocrinology division at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. It will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the Prairie Heart Institute’s James T. Dove Conference Center, 619 E. Mason St., Springfield . The program will provide general information about type 1 diabetes as well as products and services available. The exhibits begin at 5:30 p.m. and include demonstration of diabetic products such as glucose meters and insulin pumps. The sessions follow at 6:30 p.m. with three talks, "New Insulin Treatments" and "Sensors and Insulin Pumps," by Brenda Michel, diabetes nurse educator at SIU, followed by "Carb Counting" by Amy Olson, diabetes nutrition educator at SIU. The program is free to the public, but registration is encouraged. Parking is available in the visitor lots located east and south of the hospital's main entrance.
