SIU Med School Publishes 13th Annual SCOPE Magazine

The thirteenth annual edition of SCOPE literary magazine has been published by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

Produced each year by SIU medical students, this edition of SCOPE contains 25 short stories, poems, drawings and photographs submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the School. The issue was introduced during a reading of the best works in April at the medical school in Springfield.

Prizes were awarded to the top three entries in the categories of poetry, prose and visual art. The winners, judged by the editorial staff, received small monetary awards.

First-place poetry winner was Shannon Keith Kelley, husband of Rhona Kelley, assistant professor of information and communication sciences, for "Of Kin." Second-place winner was Allona Beasley Mitchell, interim registrar for the Pearson Museum, for "Sucre de Pomme Belle de Boskoop." Third-place winner was Sandra L. Shea, Ph.D., associate professor of family and community medicine in Carbondale, for "Mount St. Helens Reflects."

The first-place prose winner was Dr. Stewart Massad, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of gynecologic oncology, for "Celebrants." Second-place winner was Kourtney Bradford, third-year medical student from Fairview Heights, for "The Other Side of the Clipboard." Third-place winner was Dr. John Grace, a 2000 SIU graduate and psychiatrist from Crystal River, Fla., for "My Dearest Reader."

The first-place visual art award was presented to Mitchell for her montage, "Esternia," which was featured on the cover of this year’s edition of SCOPE. Second-place winner was April Hlad, community member, for her oil painting, "Self Portrait." Third-place winner was Christopher Erick Rivera, a second-year medical student from Springfield, who also won the People’s Choice Award, for his pencil sketch "Torn."

Ben Cady, a second-year medical student from Hillsboro, and Blaine Eubanks, a second-year medical student from Eldorado, served as editors-in-chief of SCOPE. The editorial team included associate editors - Lacey Ufkes, a first-year medical student from Quincy, Omonigho Ekhomu, a first-year medical student from Chicago, Matthew Ashley, a first-year medical student from Bakersfield, Calif., and, Torie Johnson, a first-year medical student from Pittsfield; and layout editors - Anne Elliott, a fourth-year medical student from Springfield, and Janice Vandeveer, a second-year medical student from Teutopolis. Other staff include review editor - Seth Hahs, a fourth-year medical student from Salem; poetry readers - Sara Dyrstad, a third-year medical student from Morton, and Andy Coombs, a second-year medical student from Mahomet; art editor - Holly Eltrevoog, a second-year medical student from Mazon; and publicity editor - Nereida Rojas, a second-year medical student from Chicago.

Staff editors are Karen Carlson, publications coordinator, and Jim Hawker, photographer, both in external and health affairs. Web editor is Jean Afflerbach, computer information specialist in education and curriculum. Faculty advisors are Phillip Davis, Ph.D., associate professor of medical humanities in Springfield, and Jacqueline Scolari, Ph.D., director of the medical resource center in Carbondale.
