Two SIU School of Medicine faculty members have received national honors –

Dr. Susan Hingle , associate professor of internal medicine, is the recipient of the Walter J. McDonald Award for Young Physicians. The award is given to one physician at the annual meeting of American College of Physicians each spring in Philadelphia. It recognizes outstanding achievements by a physician under 40 years of age in the areas of leadership, academics, including publishing, teaching, mentoring and/or volunteering.

Hingle was recognized for her efforts in the areas of medical education, women’s health and volunteerism as well as serving as an outstanding role model for residents and students.

Hingle joined the SIU faculty in 1998. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. (1997). She earned her medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago (1993) and her bachelor's at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio (1989). Hingle is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

At the same meeting, Dr. David Steward , professor and chair of internal medicine, was elected as a Master in the American College of Physicians. Mastership recognizes an individual’s outstanding contributions to medicine, including teaching, clinical work or improvements to delivery of health care.

Steward joined the SIU faculty in 1979. He completed his internal medicine residency at SIU (1978). He earned his medical and bachelor's degrees at the University of Iowa in Iowa City (1972, 1975). He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
