Two from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have received professional honors --

Gina Paul, Ph.D., assistant professor in MEDPREP in Carbondale, received a competitive grant to attend the 2007 Central Association of Advisors for Health Professions (CAAHP) meeting this spring in Omaha.   Travel grants are awarded to members to attend regional meetings to enhance their advising skills through the workshops, presentations and updates from various health professionals.

At the meeting Paul and Steven Verhulst, Ph.D., professor of statistics and research consulting at SIU School of Medicine, presented two posters – “Triangulation and Passage Analysis Worksheets to Analyze Verbal Reasoning Mistakes” and “The Use of Deep Breathing Meditation to Reduce Test Anxiety.”

Paul joined the School in 2002.  She earned her doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction and her master’s and bachelor’s degrees at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (2001, 1996, 1994).

Dr. Deanna M. St. Germain, assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine, received the national Commissioner’s Award from the Department of Health and Human Services at their annual meeting in Portland, Ore. in April.  This annual award “recognizes those who through their hard work and dedication have made outstanding contributions toward the prevention, intervention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.”

St. Germain was named to the medical school faculty in 2002 and serves as the medical director of the Children’s Medical Resource Network and of the outpatient health center at Union County Hospital, both in Anna, Ill.  She earned her medical degree in osteopathic medicine from the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine (1983) and her bachelor’s in biology from St. Joseph’s College in North Windham, Maine (1979).  She is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.
