SIU Cancer Institute Offers Talk by Cancer Physician

A public education program for cancer patients and survivors is being offered in February by the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine.

“Beyond Surviving: Thriving!” will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 22, at the James T. Dove, M.D. Conference Center, Prairie Heart Institute, 619 E. Mason, Springfield.  The presentation is jointly sponsored by Memorial Medical Center, St. John’s Hospital and SIU School of Medicine.

Dr. Daniel Vicario, medical director of the San Diego Cancer Research Institute and director of the Integrative Oncology Program at San Diego Cancer Center, and Dani Grady, a cancer survivor and co-founder of Cancer Survivorship: San Diego!, will discuss the possibilities of living life to the fullest while facing the challenges of cancer.  The uplifting talk with focus on how to develop the transformative tools and perspectives for living through and beyond cancer.

Vicario and Grady also are speakers for SIU’s seventh annual cancer symposium for physicians and health professionals on Friday, February 23, at the Wedeberg Conference Center, Memorial Medical Center, 701 N. First Street, Springfield.

The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute is focusing SIU’s efforts in cancer research, physician and public education, and treatment for patients from across central and southern Illinois.  More than 75 SIU physician and basic science faculty are involved with the Institute.

The program also has received support from National City Bank.  There is no charge for the program, but registration is encouraged.  Contact SIU’s Continuing Medical Education Office, 545-7711 weekdays.
