SIU Med School Publishes 14th Annual SCOPE Magazine

The fourteenth annual edition of SCOPE literary magazine has been published by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

Produced each year by SIU medical students, this edition of SCOPE contains 30 short stories, poems, drawings and photographs submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the School.  The issue was introduced during a reading of the best works this month at the medical school in Springfield.

Prizes were awarded to the top three entries in the categories of poetry, prose and visual art.  The winners, judged by the editorial staff, received small monetary awards.

First-place poetry winner was Fawn Hoener, Visiting Nurses Association of Memorail Medical Center, for “Wishbones.”  Second-place winner was Dr. Ryan Naffziger, 1998 SIU graduate and plastic surgeon in Farmington, N.M., for “Ended Journey.”  Third-place winner was Matthew Blaine Eubanks, third-year medical student from Eldorado, for “Unfinished Cancer Hospital.”

The first-place prose winner was Dr. Wesley McNeese, associate professor of medicine, for “A South End Sunday Morning.”  Second-place winner was Michael L. Youther, emeritus instructor of physiology in Carbondale, for “The Fighter.”  Third-place winner was Carrie Kefalas, second-year medical student from Lake Mary, Fla., for “[Suspect].”

The first-place visual art award was presented to Gwen Redwood, third-year medical student from Springfield for her untitled photograph, which was featured on the cover of this year’s edition of SCOPE.  Second-place winner was Ross Silverman, J.D., associate professor of medical humanities, for his photo, “La Vida Cubana.”  Third-place winner was Allona Beasley Mitchell, curator of the Pearson Museum, for her photo “Michigan Avenue After a Summer’s Rain.”  The People’s Choice Award went to Jeremy Anderson, a clerk in the School’s information resources unit, for “Evangeline.” 

Omonigho Ekhomu, a second-year medical student from Chicago, Lacey Ufkes, a second-year medical student from Quincy, and Matthew Ashley, a second-year medical student from Bakersfield, Calif., served as editors-in-chief of SCOPE.  The editorial team included associate editors – Kaitlin Morton, a first-year medical student from Springfield, and Gina Paulauskis, a first-year medical student from Glen Carbon, Co.; and layout editors – Janice Vandeveer, a third-year medical student from Teutopolis, and Ufkes.  Other staff include review editor – Kate Pedersen, a second-year medical student from Dunlap, and Adam Houghton, a first-year medical student from Havana; publicity editor – J. Adam McLaughlin, a second-year medical student from Greenwood Village, Co.; poetry editor – Hassan Hassan, a second-year medical student from Belleville; art editor – Kefalas; prose editor – Sarah Starnes, second-year student from Normal; and reading/reception coordinators – Whitney Luke, second-year medical student from Springfield, and Ashley.

Staff editors are Karen Carlson, publications coordinator, and Jim Hawker, photographer, both in external and health affairs.  Web editor is Jean Afflerbach, computer information specialist in education and curriculum.  Faculty advisors are Phillip Davis, Ph.D., associate professor of medical humanities in Springfield, and Jacqueline Scolari, Ph.D., director of the medical resource center in Carbondale.         

Previous SCOPE editions are posted online and the new edition will be added to the site at http://www.siumed.edu/oec/ SCOPE/index.htm.  Copies are available by calling Carlson at SIU External Affairs, 217-545-0870 weekdays or email scope@siumed.edu.  Submissions for the 2008 edition of SCOPE will be accepted from October to December 2007.
