Two SIU Medical Students Present Research

Victor Stams, a third-year medical student at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, presented a research abstract he has worked on at the American Transplant Congress meeting in San Francisco in May.

The project, titled “Edaravone and N-Acetylcysteine Inhibit Renal Ischemia,” was jointly developed with the principle investigator, Dr. Timothy O’Connor, associate professor of surgery, and Carrie Harrison, a surgery researcher.

Stams is the son of Marguerete Stams of Chicago.  He has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Alcorn State University (2002).

Dr. Antoine LeFlore, a graduating senior at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, co-authored an article published in the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Endourology.

The article, “Laparoscopic Cryotherapy for Pediatric Angiomyolipoma: The First Report,” was written with Dr. Patrick H. McKenna, professor of surgery, and Dr. Bradley F. Schwartz, associate professor of surgery.

LeFlore begins his residency in emergency medicine in July at Indiana State University School of Medicine.   He is the son of Marlin LeFlore and Clara Leflore, both of Chicago.  He has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Eureka College (1999).
