SIU Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Night

Treating diabetes is the topic of a public education program to be presented in November in Springfield by the endocrinology division at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.  It will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the Wedeberg Conference Center, Memorial Medical Center, 701 N. 1st Street, Springfield.

The program will provide general information for patients with diabetes and their families about approaches to treating diabetes with lifestyle and medications and preventing complications.

The exhibits will open at 5:30 p.m. and include demonstrations of diabetic products.  The presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. with four talks -- “Living in a Supersized World” by Kelly Powell, SIU diabetes nutrition educator; “Diabetes Medications” by Dr. Kevin Hazard, and “Diabetes Control: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” by Dr. Jeffrey S. Kerr, both SIU endocrinology fellows; and “Diabetes and Emotions” by Brenda Michel, SIU certified diabetes educator.

The program is free to the public.  Parking is available in the visitor lots located east and south of the hospital’s main entrance.  For more information call, SIU School of Medicine at 545-8065 weekdays.
