May 6, 2008 SIU Med School Publishes 15th Edition of SCOPE Magazine The fifteenth annual edition of SCOPE literary magazine has been published by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Produced each year by SIU medical students, this edition of SCOPE contains 33 short stories, poems, drawings and photographs submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the School. The issue was introduced during a reading of the best works last month at the medical school in Springfield. Prizes were awarded to the top three entries in the categories of poetry, prose and visual art. The winners, judged by the editorial staff, received small monetary awards. First-place poetry winner was Jan Presley, from the community, for “You Speak of Med School Cadavers.” Second-place winner was Blaine Eubanks, fourth-year medical student from Eldorado, for “Acquiescence.” Third-place winner was Susan Russell, mother of first-year student Amber May, for “The Character of a Child.” The first-place prose winner was Blaine Eubanks, fourth-year medical student from Eldorado, for “Eggs.” Second-place winner was Michael L. Youther, emeritus instructor of physiology in Carbondale, for “The Good Old Days.” Third-place winner was Fawn Hoener, hospice nurse at Memorial Medical Center, for “All Hallow’s Eve.” The first-place visual art award was presented to Tomas Schaver, son of Maggie Schaver, Neurology, for his painting “Train in the City,” which was featured on the cover of this year’s edition of SCOPE. Second-place winner was Kelsey Thornton, daughter of Carol Thornton, Medical Library, for her charcoal sketch, “Skeleton.” Third-place winner was Ed Linn, father of fourth-year student Sarah Linn, for his photo “Twisted Palm.” The People’s Choice Award went to Jeremy Anderson, a clerk in the School’s information resources unit, for his photo “Modern Heating, Circa 1920.” Kaitlin Morton, a second-year medical student from Springfield, and Gina Paulauskis, a second-year medical student from Glen Carbon, served as editors-in-chief of SCOPE. The editorial team included associate editors – Amber May, a first-year medical student from Lindenhurst, and Kate Richards, a first-year medical student from Wood River; layout editors – Ashley Starwalt, a second-year medical student from Mattoon, Lacey Ufkes, third-year student from Quincy, and Janice Vandeveer, fourth-year student from Teutopolis. Other staff include review editors – Adam Houghton, a second-year medical student from Havana, Jen DeLuka, a second-year medical student from Tallula, Natasha Kyte, first-year student from Walnut, Calif., Hannah Park, first-year student from Round Lake, and Doug Sheffer, first-year student from Carbondale; publicity editors – Torie Johnson, second-year medical student from Pittsfield, Adam Andruska, first-year student from Marine and Mary Sterritt, first-year student from New Baden; poetry/prose editor –Paulaskis; art editor – Morton, Irene Meder, first-year student from Springfield, and Annie Parkin, first-year student from Galesburg; reading/reception coordinators – Whitney Luke, third-year medical student from Springfield, and Tyler Allison, second-year student from Riverton; and staff – Andrew Bloom, first-year student from Coal Valley, Esther Khatabi, first-year student from Chicago, and Julie Fultz, first-year student from Savoy. Staff editors for SCOPE are Karen Carlson, publications coordinator, and Jim Hawker, photographer, both in external and health affairs. Web editor is Jean Afflerbach, computer information specialist in education and curriculum. Faculty advisors are Phillip Davis, Ph.D., associate professor of medical humanities in Springfield, and Jacqueline Scolari, Ph.D., director of the medical resource center in Carbondale.
