November 17, 2008 SIU Med School Sponsors Cancer Educational Program “Coping with Cancer During the Holidays” is the topic of a public educational event to be presented next month in Springfield by the Side-by-Side program at the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on two days and at two locations: Tuesday, December 2, at the Wedeberg Conference Center, Memorial Medical Center, 701 N. First St. and Thursday, December 4, at the Dove Conference Center, Prairie Heart Institute, 619 E. Mason St. The evening program will provide information to help patients and families deal with cancer while coping with the stress and anxieties of the holiday season. The services of SCCI’s Side-by-Side program and the American Cancer Society also will be discussed. The informational session begins at 5 p.m. with presentations by Rhonda Johnson, Ph.D., assistant professor and chief of the psycho-oncology division, and Rebecca Loschen, social worker, both with SIU, and Katherine Howerter, a social worker with the American Cancer Society.
