July 7, 2008 SIU Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Night for Kids and Teens A public education program designed for children and adolescents with diabetes and their families will be presented in Springfield this July by the endocrinology division at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. It will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at the Wedeberg Conference Center, Memorial Medical Center, 701 N. 1st Street, Springfield. The exhibits will open at 5:30 p.m. and include demonstrations of diabetic products. The presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and include - a food lab with demonstrations and discussions on food for everyday eating and special occasions, diabetes in the schools, insulin pumps and continuous glucose sensors, use of insulin, and the prevention and treatment of low blood sugar. The presenters include Kelly Powell, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, and Brenda Michel, registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, both of SIU School of Medicine. The program is free to the public. Parking is available in the visitor lots located east and south of the hospital’s main entrance.
