August 1, 2008 SIU Med School Sponsors Indian Ethnic Heritage Day An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring the culture of India will be held Tuesday, August 12, at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The event will be held noon to 1:30 p.m. in the second floor lobby of the School’s main building at 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield. Guest speakers will be Dr. Shyam Bhat and Jay Mukerji. Bhat, assistant professor of internal medicine and psychiatry at SIU, will speak about integrative medicine, a holistic approach to healing that combines Western and Eastern medicine. Mukerji, secretary of the India Association of Greater Springfield, will talk about “The Old India and the New India.” There will be displays of Indian culture and an ethnic food tasting following the presentations. Ethnic Heritage Day celebrations are held regularly at the medical school to share information about various ethnic cultures.
