Two faculty members at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have received honors at the annual meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) this month in San Antonio.

Dr. David S. Resch, Dr. David Resch portrait associate professor of internal medicine and psychiatry, is one of the 45 national finalists for the 2008 Humanism in Medicine Award, presented by the AAMC through support of the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative.  The award singles out faculty physicians who are positive and caring role models.  Resch was nominated by SIU medical students.  He previously received SIU’s Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in May 2007, a national honor given to faculty members who demonstrate compassion, respect for patients and families, and clinical excellence.

Resch is chief of SIU’s internal medicine-psychiatry division and medical director for the internal medicine-psychiatry unit at Memorial Medical Center.  He joined SIU’s faculty in 1992.  He completed residencies in internal medicine and psychiatry at SIU and University of Iowa (1990, 1992).  Resch earned his medical degree at SIU (1986) and his bachelor’s degree at Illinois Wesleyan University (1982).  He is board certified in internal medicine, psychiatry and neurology, with added qualifications in geriatric psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine.

Connie Poole Connie Poole portrait has been chosen as president-elect of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL).  She is associate dean for information resources and chair of SIU’s information and communication sciences department.  After a one-year term, Poole will become president of the group.  AAHSL is the association of libraries serving U.S. and Canadian medical schools, all members of or affiliated with the AAMC.

Poole joined the SIU faculty in 1990.  She earned her master in library science degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1974) and her bachelor’s degree at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa (1973).
