SIU Cancer Institute Offers Talk by Cancer Survivor

A public education program for people with cancer, survivors and their families is being offered in February by the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

“Finding Your Strength” will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 19, at the James T. Dove Conference Center at Prairie Heart Institute, 619 Mason St., Springfield.  The presentation is jointly sponsored by Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital with funding support from National City Bank.

Nancy Amicangelo, executive director of Breast Cancer Network of Strength™ (BCNOS), formerly the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization, will discuss what individuals can do to fight breast cancer.  Her suggestions include encouraging friends and relatives to participate in screenings and communicating about survivorship and insurance issues.  She also will discuss the importance of pink ribbons and walks.

Amicangelo is a founding member of the Illinois affiliate of BCNOS and served as its first board president for six years.  She is a 15-year breast cancer survivor and has been an advocate in the fight against the disease for more than a decade.

The mission of the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU is to serve the people of central and southern Illinois by addressing their present and future cancer care needs through medical education, biomedical research and patient service.  Its Web site is www.siumed.edu/cancer.

There is no charge for the program, but registration is encouraged.  Contact JoAnn Lemaster at the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU, 217-545-7493 weekdays.
