SIU Med School Pediatric Cardiologist Sees Patients in Quincy

Dr. Tankut Önal, a specialist in pediatric cardiology, is now seeing patients on the second Tuesday of each month at Blessing Hospital, 11th and Broadway, Quincy.  Önal is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield and one of the new pediatric specialists recruited as part of St. John’s Children’s Hospital (SJCH), a joint endeavor of SIU and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Treatment options for children seeing Dr. Onal at Blessing Hospital include electrocardiogram, holter and event monitors, and echocardiography.  Complex cases are referred to St. John’s Children’s Hospital in Springfield or St. Louis Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.

Önal is board eligible for certification by the American Board of Pediatrics.  Before joining SIU’s faculty in 2007, he completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Gainesville (2007) and a pediatric residency, including a year as chief resident, at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport (2004).  His research interests include pulmonary hypertension in children and cardiac MRI imaging.
