SIU Med School Sponsors Alzheimer’s Disease Conference
Risk and protective factors and early intervention are the topics of a conference on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. It will be offered by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 11. The intended audience is health care professionals as well as family caregivers. A series of presentations will be held at the Dove Conference Center, Prairie Heart Institute, 619 E. Mason St., Springfield.
The conference is sponsored by SIU’s Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders (CADRD), one of three state-supported centers in Illinois.
“The conference will share important information about the latest findings in pioneering research on nutrition, physical and mental exercise, stress control and early interventions to promote health aging,” said Ron Zec, Ph.D., SIU associate professor of neurology and psychiatry. “It is appropriate for health care providers as well as anyone interested in maximizing brain health and reducing risk factors for dementia.”
Sessions begin at 8 a.m. with “Overview of Risk and Protective Factors for Alzheimer’s Disease.” The other morning sessions are “Mediterranean Diet and Alzheimer’s Disease” and “Exercise and Fitness in Alzheimer’s Disease.”
Afternoon sessions begin at 1 p.m. with “Cognitive Reserve and Effect on Development and Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease.” The other afternoon sessions are “Advances in the Genetic Studies of Alzheimer’s Disease” and “An Update on Pharmacologic Interventions for Alzheimer’s Disease.”
