October 26, 2009 SIU Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Night A public education program designed for people with diabetes and their families will be presented in Springfield this November by the endocrinology division at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. It will be held 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, November 2, at the James T. Dove M.D., Conference Center, Prairie Heart Institute, 619 E. Mason St., Springfield. The exhibits will open at 6 p.m. and include demonstrations of diabetic products. The presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. with four talks - “A Can of Motivation,” “Care of Your Feet,” “Oral Medications” and “Complications of Diabetes.” The SIU presenters include Kelly Powell, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator; Brenda Michel, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, and Dr. Poornima Jayaramaiah and Dr. Nicoleta Speil, both endocrinology fellows. The program is free to the public. Parking is available on the top level of the Mason Street parking ramp that is adjacent to the Prairie Heart Institute.
