SIU Med School Offers “Healthy Living” Program

A six-week program, Journey to Healthy Living, is being offered by the Department of Internal Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. The program meets 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, March 3 – April 7, at the SIU Clinics, 751 N. Rutledge, lower level, Springfield. The cost for the six-week program is $10 and registration is required.
The program is designed for adults who have on-going or chronic health conditions and need help in managing their overall health. Individuals who can benefit from the program may include, but not limited to, those with asthma, diabetes, heart or lung disease, high blood pressure, stroke, depression, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and obesity.
The program focuses on working with the health care team, dealing with fatigue and frustration, relaxing and handling stress, eating healthy, controlling pain, setting goals for better health, using medications effectively and increasing energy levels. It was developed by Stanford University and now is used internationally. SIU health care staff, trained for the program, conduct the workshop.
