SIU Med School Announces Hertweck Scholarship
Hannah Craig, a first-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the Virginia J. Hertweck Memorial Endowment Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Craig is the fourth individual to receive the award, which is given annually to an SIU medical student planning on entering the primary care field and who is from Schuyler, Cass or Brown counties or other rural areas.
Craig, the daughter of James and Hilda Craig of Beardstown, is a graduate of Rosslyn Academy in Nairobi, Kenya (2004) and Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, where she earned her bachelor’s degree (2008).
The Hertweck Scholarship was established in 2001 by Viginia’s husband, Wolfgang Hertweck, formerly of Rushville, in honor of her dedication to health care and lifelong learning. Family and friends continue to contribute to the fund.
Virginia Hertweck was a clinical instructor in SIU’s Department of Family and Community Medicine for six years and also worked as a certified family nurse practitioner and physician assistant throughout central Illinois. She was administrator of the Cass County Health Department for 12 years.
Gifts received by the Southern Illinois University Foundation support the growth of the School of Medicine. Individuals interested in making a donation can contact the SIU Foundation office at 217-545-2955 weekdays or go online to www.siumed.edu/foundation.
