Summer Lab Internships Offered by SIU Cancer Institute
College students who plan a career in medicine or research with a focus on cancer research will have the opportunity to learn basic laboratory techniques with supervision through a summer internship program at SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute (SCCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. The paid internship is available to three qualified students on a competitive basis.
“We view this as both an opportunity for students and our investment in individuals who may focus their medical career on cancer research as a result of the positive experience that they have with the Institute,” said Dr. K. Thomas Robbins, SCCI director.
The deadline to apply for the internship is March 15. The term of the internships is June 1 to August 15, 2010. Interested candidates should submit their college transcripts, a resume and two letters of reference from instructors along with a personal statement letter explaining current studies, activities and future goals. Successful candidates will be required to write a brief paper regarding their experience at its conclusion in August.
Materials should be submitted to Morris Cooper, Ph.D., associate director for basic research for SCCI and SIU professor and chair of medical microbiology, immunology and cell biology. The preferred method of submission is by using PDF formatted documents that are emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. They can be mailed to him at SIU School of Medicine, P.O. Box 19626, Springfield, IL 62794-9626.
