UK Health Care Reform Topic for Public Talk
Health care reform in the United Kingdom is the topic of a public lecture to be presented by a visiting professor in the Department of Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Lord Ara Darzi of Denham will speak at noon Thursday, October 8, in the Bunn Auditorium at St. John’s Hospital, 800 E. Carpenter St., Springfield.
Lord Darzi is a professor at the Institute of Cancer Research and holds the Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery at Imperial College London, both in England. He currently serves as the UK’s global ambassador for health and life sciences and chair of the National Health System Global Forum. He was appointed to the House of Lords and named parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department of Health (2007-09). He was made a Knight of the British Empire for his services in medicine and surgery in 2002 and a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council in 2009.
Lord Darzi is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, the Academy of Medical Sciences, the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. He and his team are internationally known for their innovative work in the advancement of minimal invasive surgery and the development and use of allied technologies.
