SIU HealthCare Offers Free Car Seat Inspection

A free car seat inspection and health fair event, “Spring into Safety,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at the Simmons Cancer Institute parking lot, corner of Carpenter and Rutledge Streets, Springfield.

ThinkFirst, an injury prevention program offered by SIU HealthCare in Springfield, will have safety specialists on site to provide free car seat inspections.  Health information about dental care, hand washing, nutrition, skin care and choking prevention will be provided by SIU medical students, staff from the family and community medicine department, and Simmons Cancer Institute.  The Springfield Police Department will set up an obstacle course to demonstrate the hazards of texting and driving.

Lunch will be sold by the SIU medical students with proceeds benefiting their medical mission trips.
The event is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety; ThinkFirst; Illinois Secretary of State’s Office; Health Alliance Medical Plans and Green Hyundai.

ThinkFirst is the SIU School of Medicine's head and spinal cord injury prevention program.  Started in 1990, this 20-year-old educational program informs the public about the dangers of risk-taking activities.

For more information contact Mary Kay Reed, ThinkFirst program coordinator, at 217-545-9112 weekdays.
