SIU Med School Starts New Cancer Support Group for Women

A new support group for women who are being treated for cancer or who are cancer survivors has been started at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.  Women Around You (WAY) will meet at 5:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesdays of each month beginning on August 25.  The one-hour meetings will be held in SCI’s Side-by-Side Place of Wellness (Room 3015), 315 W. Carpenter, Springfield.

The group is for women 20-50 years of age who have experienced cancer.  It will be led by Anna Wiggins, a member of the SCI staff in the psycho-oncology division.  SCI’s Side-by-Side Place of Wellness provides treatment and support for individuals, their families and caregivers who are living with cancer.

“This is an opportunity for women who are going through treatment or have been through this journey, to share, talk about concerns, and discuss a variety of issues with women who understand the cancer experience,” Wiggins said.

To RSVP or for more information, call SCI’s Side-by-Side Place of Wellness at 217-545-7654 weekdays.

The mission of the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU is to serve the people of central and southern Illinois by addressing their present and future cancer care needs through medical education, biomedical research and patient service.  Its Web site is www.siumed.edu/cancer.
