Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Starts New Support Group for Caregivers

A new support group for individuals who are caregivers for or loved ones of cancer patients has been started at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.  The group meets for one-hour meetings at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays at the SCI’s Side-by-Side Wellness Center (Room 3015), 315 W. Carpenter, Springfield.

The group is for anyone who is currently a caregiver for a cancer patient as well as a loved one of a patient.  It will be led by Ellen Brotzman-DeSart, the education coordinator for Side-by-Side.

“This is an opportunity for someone who is providing care to a cancer patient or has a loved one affected by cancer, to share their concerns, their experiences and discuss the many emotions that are a consequence of living with cancer,” Brotzman-DeSart said.

To RSVP or for more information, call SCI’s Side-by-Side Wellness Center at 217-545-7654 weekdays.  Parking is available next to the building.

The mission of the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU is to serve the people of central and southern Illinois by addressing their present and future cancer care needs through education, research, patient care and community service.  Its Web site is www.siumed.edu/cancer.
