SIU Sports Medicine Hosts Triathlon Program

The sports medicine providers at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine are hosting a public event to help local athletes prepare for the summer triathlon season.  Titled “Triathlon: Basics & Beyond Training,” the event will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, at the Simmons Cancer Institute, 315 W. Carpenter Street, Springfield.  Parking is available next to the building.  Co-sponsors are Triharder Promotions and Hardy Breed.

Topics to be covered include transition set up, T1 and T2, swimming efficiently, and bike and running training including equipment choices and techniques.  Both novice and experienced triathletes are encouraged to participate in preparation for the Stoneman Sprint and Iron Abe Olympic triathlons being held July 30 at Lake Springfield.

Several elite athletes in the field will share their knowledge including a USA Triathlon certified race director, an Ironman finisher, an ultra-marathoner and a tri-swim coach.  SIU faculty physicians on the program are Dr. Saadiq El-Amin, Ph.D., assistant professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation, and Dr. James Daniels, professor of family and community medicine.
