SIU Med School Announces Templeton Scholarship
Benjamin D. Mathis, a second-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the J.S. Templeton, M.D., Memorial Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The award is given annually to a student from Perry County who is currently enrolled at SIU School of Medicine.
Mathias is the son of David and Darby Mathis of Pinckneyville. He is a graduate of Pinckneyville High School (2003) and St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where he earned his doctorate degree in pharmacy (2009).
The Templeton Scholarship was established in 1993 by Harriss Malan of Carbondale and Jane Templeton Minton of DuQuoin, in memory of their uncle and father, Dr. James Scott Templeton. Templeton was a general practitioner who practiced in the Pickneyville area for more than sixty years. He also was a founder of Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
