APPLYING FOR RESIDENCY

SIU School of Medicine
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Springfield, Illinois

Department Chair: J. Ricardo Loret de Mola, M.D.
Program Director:  Erica Nelson, M.D.,
Residency Coordinator:  Joan Evans

The SIU Ob/Gyn Department participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) whereby application materials (application, Dean’s letter, transcripts, board scores, and letters of recommendation) are transmitted from medical schools and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to selected programs via computers and the internet. Applicants are responsible for accessing the proper equipment to complete the application process.

It is the applicant's responsibility to have all documents sent to the program.  Applicant files will be reviewed when complete and qualified applicants will be invited to interview via telephone or e-mail.  Unfortunately, not all applicants can be invited to interview and our program does not mail "no interview" letters to applicants.  Telephone calls or e-mail inquiries are welcome.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • ERAS Application
  • Dean's Letter
  • Letters of Recommendation (3, Chair or Program Director not required)
  • Transcripts
  • Board Scores
SIU School of Medicine only accepts U.S. Citizens, permanent U.S. residents (green card holders), or foreign medical school graduates who can work on a J-1 Visa. Applicants who take USMLE Step II and receive their results after they have applied, should make sure that the Program receives the new scores. We do not require prior U.S. clinical experience for foreign medical graduates, but such experience is helpful.

The deadline for application is November 30th.  However, applicants should have their files complete by the first day in November to be competitive.  Interviews are conducted in November 1st through January 15th.
