Clinic Descriptions
General Ob-Gyn Clinics:
Patients are seen for all women’s health care services. Full prenatal care is offered for the obstetrical patient. This includes all visits during the pregnancy, sonograms and complete maternal and fetal services. Complete gynecological services are available. This includes all women’s preventative health care needs such as pap smears, breast care and care of the pre menopausal and postmenopausal female patient. Colposcopy and leep procedures are available in both clinic locations. The clinics are staffed in both locations by full time SIU faculty attending physicians.
High Risk Pregnancy Clinic:
This clinic offers care and services for the patient experiencing high-risk problems in the pregnancy. Referrals are accepted for the diabetic patient, preeclamptic patient, patients experiencing preterm labor and vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. It also includes referrals for possible fetal anomalies and genetically related problems of the fetus. Ultrasound examinations and amniocentesis is available. A full time obstetrician who is a specialist in maternal fetal medicine staffs the clinic.
High Risk Diabetic Clinic:
Patients with diabetes in pregnancy as well as gestational diabetes are seen on referral to the maternal fetal medicine clinic. This clinic is in collaboration with the SIU Department of Medicine. The patient’s diabetes is monitored throughout the pregnancy. A registered dietician is available for assessment of the patient’s diet, blood sugars and weight gain.
General Gyne and Reproductive Endocrinology Clinic:
In addition to routine gynecological services, this clinic services patients on referral for all endocrinology health care needs of the female patient. In addition, patients are seen in this clinic for evaluation and treatment of infertility. The program is comprehensive in scope, offering diagnosis and treatment of female and male infertility. There is a full service laboratory and access to radiological and surgical support for the management of infertile patients.
Gynecological Oncology Clinic:
This clinic sees patients for the medical and surgical treatment of gynecological malignancies. Physcian referrals are accepted for evaluation of abnormal women’s health care screening. Dr. L. Stewart Massad, a full time gynecological oncologist, staffs the clinic.
Urogynecology Clinic:
Referrals are accepted for diagnosis and treatment of lower urinary tract disorders of the female. This includes stress incontinence and other gynecological related urinary tract disease. Dr. Erica Nelson, a full time general OB-Gyne physician with SIU staffs this clinic.
LEEP Clinic:
In this clinic, doctors perform outpatient procedures on women with precancerous changes of the cervix. The procedure is known as LEEP, or loop electrosurgical excision procedure. It involves using an electrified wire to remove precancerous skin from the cervix, allowing normal tissue to grow back and minimizing the chance that cancer develop. It has replaced older procedures, including cervical freezing and scalpel procedures.
Procedures Clinic:
Patients are seen, as scheduled, for gynecological procedures such as colposcopy and leep. OB-Gyne resident physicians under the direct supervision of SIU OB-Gyne full time faculty physicians see patients.
Pediatric Gynecology and Sexual Abuse Clinic:
Patients are seen on referral for adolescent gynecology diagnosis and treatment. Referrals are also taken for children/adolescents who are possible sexual abuse victims. The attending physician in this clinic, Dr. Victoria Nichols Johnson, works closely with social service agencies and states attorney offices of the various referral counties. As in all of the SIU OB-Gyne clinics, confidentiality is a priority.
Continuity Clinic:
SIU OB-Gyne resident physicians see patients in this clinic for routine gynecological services. This includes all women’s health care needs such as pap smears and breast health. Residents are supervised by full time SIU faculty attending physicians. The same resident physician can see patients for four years providing continuity of care.
Stork Clinic:
Patients receive complete prenatal care and services throughout their pregnancy. OB-Gyne resident physicians see the patients providing continuity of care. The clinic works in collaboration with public health case managers to offer any social service needs the patient might require. Ultrasound technicians and a dietician are available as well. Resident physicians are supervised during this clinic by full time SIU faculty attending physicians.
Emergency High Risk Clinics:
This clinic is available for referral of the high-risk pregnant patient with an acute problem. A full time maternal fetal medicine physician, Perinatal nursing staff and an ultrasound technician, staffs the clinic.
