The Division of Gynecologic Oncology at SIU provides care to Illinois women with gynecologic cancer, preinvasive disease, abnormal Pap smears, and difficulty gynecologic surgery problems. The division operates on a team approach, with the division chief, Dr. L. Stewart Massad, collaborating with a nurse practitioner, Ms. Megan Zanger, and with SIU residents and medical students. This team approach ensures multidisciplinary care and access to fresh perspectives on gynecologic disorders. Patients receive integrated surgical and medical care, including chemotherapy, while radiation treatments are available through local hospitals. For women living far from Springfield, consultations are available to guide local specialists in the delivery of up-to-date care in the community, though women with complicated clinical problems may benefit from care at Springfield's tertiary care hospitals. The gynecologic oncology team also collaborates with local home health agencies and hospice organizations. Dr. Massad serves as an educational resource for providers throughout Illinois.
