The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is the only academic center in Illinois with American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) Fetal Echocardiography Certification. We are so proud to have such an expert team of sonographers!

The SIU School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology opened a second outpatient clinic on March 17, 2015 at 1100 Lincolnshire Blvd on the south side of Springfield, near the intersection of I-55 and I-72. Patients will be able to make an appointment at either the Carol Jo Vecchie or Lincolnshire location by calling one number, 217-545-8000. The hours of the clinic are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
All eight SIU Obstetrics and Gynecology Generalists will have some presence at the new location. The new SIU clinic features eight exam rooms, a procedure room, a full service lab, ultrasound and fetal monitoring. Patients will be able to schedule their mammograms and bone density screens through St. John’s Hospital, to be done in this building.
The eight General SIU OB-GYNs that will be seeing patients in this location are Drs. Kristina Ericsson, Arturo Garza, Kathryn Hild-Mosley, Chad Huston, Erica Nelson, Gilberto Rodrigo, Casey Younkin and Yahia Zeino.
The SIU School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has initiated a new study that may decrease the risk of fetal death in high-risk pregnancies by using a portable non-invasive smart device. Dr. Robert Abrams, division chief of Maternal Fetal Medicine is presently collaborating with Dr. Nazeih Botros, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in developing a system that monitors, records, and analyzes fetal movement in real-time.
The device being tested by Drs. Abrams and Botros is named AmmSensor and is placed around the mother’s abdomen. The patient may take the device home and data will be transmitted wirelessly to the physician. Should a problem arise she will be advised to see her physician for further testing. The benefits of this system are to decrease the number of visits a high-risk patient has and provides objective data for the doctor to see in a timely manner. Also, because the system utilizes motion-based sensors, there is no risk to the fetus.
SIU Department of OB-GYN Ultrasound has been granted reaccreditation in fetal echocardiography and obstetric/gynecological ultrasound by American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). We received the full 3-year accreditation. SIU continues to be the only academic institution in Illinois to be accredited in fetal echocardiography.
Congratulations to Jill McLean, Nicki Nattier and Jessica Orum, sonographers in OB-GYN! They recently became certified in fetal echocardiography!
