Food Safety During Pregnancy…

Eating a variety of foods from each food group is important during pregnancy. Most foods are safe, but there are some that should be avoided during pregnancy. This will minimize the risks of food borne problems.

Pregnant women should be aware of these hazardous foods during pregnancy.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines...

  • Cook all meats, poultry, and seafood thoroughly
  • Wash raw vegetables before cooking
  • Avoid unpasturized milk or foods made from it
  • Avoid soft cheese (feta, Brie, Camembert).
    Hard cheese, cream cheese, and cottage cheeses are safe.
  • While the risk associated with deli counter foods is low,
    pregnant women may choose to avoid deli meats or reheat them well.

 

Pregnant women should also follow
safe food handling and preparation practices.

  • Wash hands for 20 seconds before
  • Keep raw foods separate
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before eating
  • Put leftovers in the refrigerator promptly
