Reasons Why SIU is the Residency for YOU!

The Program:

The goal of the program is to provide experience to residents in all aspects of the specialty so that when they graduate they are well rounded and can go into private practice, academics, or subspecialty training.

SIU is a mix between a community-based program and a university-based program. Residents become excellent surgeons and technicians in our program as well as receive well-rounded didactic training.

Out of more than 89 residents who have graduated from the ob/gyn program at SIU, approximately 20 are in practice in Springfield. This demonstrates that Springfield is an excellent place to live and practice medicine. These graduates are all volunteer faculty in the program and they provide valuable patient populations for resident teaching.

Rotations occur at two state-of-the-art hospitals located seven blocks apart. One hospital is a regional perinatal center.

Didactic conferences are conducted 3 hours each week and include general ob and gyn rounds, tracing conference, pathology conference, teaching conference, and medical grand rounds. Journal Club is conducted 5-6 times a year. Basic Preparatory Lectures are conducted yearly in July and August.

Residents conduct a weekly obstetrics clinic where patients are seen for their prenatal visits. Second, third, and fourth-year residents conduct their own obstetrics and gynecology continuity clinic one half-day a week where residents gain experience in following patients from the initial contact through all follow-ups, including in-house procedures.

Residents assist in conducting faculty clinics in general obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, reproductive endocrinology, maternal-fetal medicine, urogynecology, internal medicine, geriatrics, breast, and a community STD clinic.

Residents participate in research projects culminating in yearly presentations at the annual SIU School of Medicine Research Symposium. Residents are encouraged to submit their research to be presented at national meetings and residents work toward publishing their work by the end of residency.

The Department Bonuses:

The department pays for the purchase of books for residents, approved by the program director. In addition, three pharmaceutical companies also provide free books to residents each year.

Yearly free Jr. ACOG Membership and benefits.

Yearly free subscription to "Obstetrics and Gynecology Survey" is provided.

Residents are selected to participate in occasional seminar/meeting programs, receiving free registration and travel.

Yearly awards are presented to residents:

  • Teacher of the Year Award ($250 first prize and honorable mention awards.)
  • Research Award ($250 first prize, $150 second prize, $100 third prize)
  • Outstanding Resident of the Year Award ($250)

Computer access is provided for literature searches, e-mail, internet, word processing, slide preparation, and statistics collection. Each resident is given a palmpilot for their use during their residency.

An Ob/Gyn Resident Library is available on-site which contains basic textbooks and resources, including educational CD-ROM computer programs. A comprehensive library is available to residents at the SIU School of Medicine.
