Educational Policy Council/Information Management Policy Committee

Information Technology Subcommittee

September 4, 2001 Meeting Notes

Present:  David S.  Resch, MD,  Chair; Terri Cameron,  Staff; George Dunaway, PhD; Rhona Kelley,  MSLS; Regina Kovach,  MD; Claudia McIntyre; Jeffrey Suzewits,  MD

Guests:  Paul Fleming and Rick French

  • Paul Fleming and Rick French provided a brief overview of the Information Resources structure and how faculty, staff and students should work within the structure, with the emphasis on advance communication.  All members of the subcommittee will be added to the Network Administrators list to enhance communication of announcements regarding network setup, administration, and security, as well as routine announcements regarding the portable medical library and loanable technology.  The importance of a balance between security and educational needs was also discussed.  It was reiterated that the goal of any IT initiative for any facet of the educational program should be coordination rather than fragmentation.
  • A draft of a Faculty Information Technology Needs Assessment Survey was distributed for review by the subcommittee.  It was suggested that the survey be distributed to students as well.  The survey will be distributed on paper to faculty, with a checkbox to determine whether faculty would have completed it electronically.  The student version will be sent as an online form, since students are trained to use e-mail and online forms.  Revisions suggested by the subcommittee will be made, and the surveys distributed as soon as possible so that reports of the data will be available for review at the October meeting of the subcommittee.  Any further suggestions for change should be sent to David Resch or Terri Cameron by September 10 so the survey can be mailed September 12.  It was suggested that the survey could provide valuable information for the proposed Technology Fair.
  • David Resch suggested that all members might wish to take advantage of the resources available at www.syllabus.com
  • The next meeting of the subcommittee is scheduled for Tuesday, October 2, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
