·         Educational Technology Sessions:  Dr. Resch suggested that the planned schedule be changed so that a session on wireless networking by Information Resources could be presented in advance of planned sessions on “new” technologies and electronic medical records.  This issue is also of importance as plans are made for future PDA specifications.  Ms. Cameron will contact Rick French to work out details, and will send a notice to the school community re: the November and December sessions, with a request that those who would like to see a specific device demonstrated send suggestions at least a week in advance.  Ms. Cameron reminded the group that these sessions were being scheduled a week earlier than usual to avoid holiday conflicts.  The date changes will also be stressed in the e-mail.

·         Informatics in the Curriculum:  Dr. Resch reported that the EPC had endorsed his plan to contact the year and Doctoring curriculum committees to document current informatics curricular content.

·         Assessment Software Process:  Ms. Cameron reported that the clerkships who had responded to her query re: whether Perception was meeting their needs had all responded positively.  One issue that came up was whether Perception could produce reports online reports immediately following the exams that showed only incorrect responses, with the correct answer and rationale.  Currently, students are reviewing all questions, responses, and rationales.  She added that plans were well underway for the October 18 Year 2 exam, which will be conducted using LxR paper exams and OPSCAN sheets.

·         PDA Project:  Ms. Cameron reported that several Year 2 students have suggested that the chief complaint and diagnosis drop-down menus be reviewed to make them more applicable to the types of patients they are seeing in clinics.  After much discussion, it was suggested that Dr. Resch contact SIU Physicians and Surgeons sources to obtain frequency reports of chief complaints (using data from the appointment system) and the fourth level of diagnosis detail (using ICD-9 codes) to create more appropriate lists.  Dr. Resch offered to review “unmatched” data provided by the Class of 2003 during their clerkship experiences and match chief complaints and diagnoses to the drop-down menu choices.

It was also suggested that Y2 Doctoring Mentors received data regarding chief complaints and diagnoses that students are entering.

Dr. Resch reminded the group that the PDA project was just one part of a larger Educational Portfolio project that should help students define their competencies as they apply to and begin residency programs.  The next step is to create web forms and/or PDA screens where students can enter volunteer projects, school projects, presentations, publications, research, and extracurricular activities.  Reports would include curriculum vitae-type reports, as well as aggregate reports.  It was also suggested that ACGME competencies be reviewed to determine whether some sort of matching on educational portfolio data to ACGME competencies could be done.  The Curriculum 2000 report on Educational Portfolios will be distributed to members prior to the next IT Subcommittee meeting.

·         The next meeting of the subcommittee is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Harbinger Conference Room in Springfield and Lindegren 310 in Carbondale.
