· Educational Technology Sessions: Announcements regarding the November 20 session on Emerging Technologies/”Holiday Toys” will be distributed by the end of the week. It was suggested that the posters highlight the holiday theme to increase interest. It was also suggested that Dr. Robert Glatz be asked to make a short presentation on how he uses his PDA in residency. The December 18 session will focus on office-based electronic medical records and will be presented by Jeff Suzewits (Medscape Encounter), Debra Phillips (Practice Partners), and David Resch (MedInformatics). Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital will be asked to make a presentation on hospital-based systems at the January session.
· Informatics in the Curriculum: Dr. Resch asked for suggestions from the group as to the best method for following up with the curriculum committees. He suggested either operationalizing past projects to develop a framework or working with the curriculum committees to document current initiatives that might or might not be recognized as medical informatics. There was much discussion that, although the former would be a more “top down” approach, it would require far less effort on the part of the curriculum committees. The consensus was to develop a survey based on the reports developed by EPC subcommittees in the past, with value assessments. The cover note to the committees will need to stress that medical informatics is not a content replacement, but should be integrated into existing content/activities. The survey should also include space for committees to report other medical informatics content/activities not listed on the survey, suggestions for what else should be done in the year or at another point in the curriculum, and what training faculty and students need to teach/learn about medical informatics.
· Assessment Software Process: this topic was not discussed.
· PDA Project: Dr. Resch reported that diagnosis frequency reports by department have been requested from Physicians and Surgeons, and this data will be used to enhance the existing drop-down menus for the PDAs. Ms. Cameron will provide reports for the next meeting that show frequencies for the exit objectives included in the diagnosis drop-down menus on the PDA clinical encounter logs.
· Educational Portfolios: Two documents outlining work done by previous faculty committees regarding educational portfolios were reviewed. There was discussion as to whether the concept of educational portfolios is important for residency, whether educational portfolios could be useful in tying the curriculum and assessment to ACGME competencies, whether participation should be optional or required, the amount of detail necessary, institutional value vs. student value, whether educational portfolio data could be tied to ERAS and/or the Dean’s Letter and/or student curriculum vitas, and who should be involved in the process before implementation. The consensus of the discussion was to focus immediate efforts on who should be involved in the process prior to implementation and on producing sample screens and reports to broaden faculty and student horizons as to the potential value of educational portfolios.
· Other: Ms. Cameron will survey subcommittee members in an effort to find a date when more members are available, particularly students.
· The next meeting of the subcommittee is scheduled for Tuesday, December 3, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Harbinger Conference Room in Springfield and Lindegren 310 in Carbondale.
