·         Educational Technology Sessions:  Announcements regarding the January 29 Educational Technology session on hospital-based electronic medical records were distributed for review by the group and will be distributed around campus by the end of the week.  Ms. Cameron distributed a proposed 2003 schedule based on suggestions made over the past few months and postponed programs from the 2002 schedule.  The schedule was approved for distribution with a poll regarding the time of the sessions to determine whether 4:30 pm sessions might generate higher attendance or whether the time should alternate between noon and 4:30 pm.  The February 26 session on decision support software was briefly discussed, and it was suggested that the January presenters from Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital be asked to make presentations on software currently in use in the hospitals.

·         Informatics in the Curriculum:  The survey discussed at previous meetings was distributed and approved for distribution.  It will be distributed to curriculum directors electronically, and responses will be reviewed at the February meeting.

·         Assessment Software Process:  This topic will be the focus of the March meeting.  Dr. Resch asked that a list of potential assessment software with pros and cons for each and a detailed comparison between LxRTest and Perception be prepared for the meeting.  The focus of the discussion will be on what software will best meet the needs of the school for an item pool that will allow faculty to review student retention of key concepts over time.

·         PDA Project:  Dr. Resch announced that he had scheduled a February 13 meeting for all faculty to discuss the appropriate use of PDAs in the clinical setting in response to faculty concerns regarding both student and faculty behavior.  The purpose of the meeting will be to provide background and education regarding the potential benefits of the use of such equipment in the clinical setting, as well as to work with faculty to develop a policy regarding such use.  Ms. Cameron was asked to develop a summary of policies at other medical schools for review at the February meeting.

Ms. Cameron distributed a spreadsheet that listed SIU P & S frequency listings of diagnoses for all departments matched to SIUSOM Exit Objectives and logbook menu options.  The subcommittee was asked to review this data for discussion at the February meeting regarding potential tailoring of logbook drop-down menus for Doctoring in Years 1 and 2 and the clerkships.  Part of this process will be to include ICD9 codes with each diagnosis, so students begin to recognize the coding system.

Dr. Resch reported that Handspring Neos had been ordered for the Class of 2006 and were expected to be delivered in the next few days.  He added that OEC staff are currently reviewing all software used in the PDA project to determine which programs are platform-independent as plans continue for PDAs in the Class of 2007.

·         Educational Portfolios:  Ms. Cameron reported that Loyola medical school representatives are considering options for allowing SIUSOM faculty and staff to access guest or demonstration accounts for their educational portfolio system.  In addition, she provided the following list of electronic resources for inclusion in an electronic portfolio:

Data currently available electronically

·         Demographic Data (including educational background)

·         Y3/Y4 Schedules (including online scheduling requests)

·         Logbook Data (Years 2-4)

Data in process electronically

·         Year 2 Evaluations

·         Clerkship Evaluations

·         Elective Evaluations

New data collection forms necessary

·         Research activity

·         Extracurricular activity

·         Community/Volunteer/Service activity

·         Other:  Dr. Resch reported that he had been in contact with a vendor who might be willing to provide funding for a large-group interactive software for use in the curriculum.  There was consensus that this could be a useful tool, and that he should continue to investigate the issue.

·         The next meeting of the subcommittee is scheduled for Monday, February 3, from noon to 1 pm in the Harbinger Conference Room in Springfield and Lindegren 310 in Carbondale.
