T. Cameron, Staff

G. Dunaway

E. Nelson

M. Shanahan

Dr. Davis distributed a copy of the revised Faculty Statement of Principles about Teaching (September, 2003) to members.  He explained that the suggestions from the last meeting had been incorporated.

Multiple suggestions for changes to the document were made and discussed.  Dr. Davis explained that the will distribute a revised version for review and comment via e-mail.

The next decision is which curriculum documents this document might replace and where it should be included in existing documents.  Ms. Cameron was asked to prepare a list of documents and distribute the list via e-mail prior to the next meeting.  It was suggested that the Faculty Statement be included as introductory material in every major curriculum document.

The following potential changes were discussed:

  • Under Guiding Principles, there was discussion as to whether the terms “Duty, Integrity, and Respect” should be used (as they are used in the AAMC Compact Between Teachers and Learners of Medicine) or whether the terms “Compassion, Respect, and Integrity” should be used, since those are the terms used in the White Coat Ceremony and printed on printed on the pins distributed to students.  The consensus was that the terms “Duty, Integrity and Respect” more accurately reflected the detail of the document.
  • Under the Commitments of Faculty, the second sub-bullet of the second bullet will be revised to:  “In assessing student performance in either academic or other competencies, faculty have the responsibility to document success or failure, provide honest feedback, and make promotion and retention decisions.”
  • Under the Commitments of Students and Residents, two additional bullets will be added so that the issues described in the last two bullets for faculty (abuse/exploitation and witnesses abuse or unprofessional behavior) are listed for students, as well.

It was also suggested that the bullets in the document be converted to numbers, to make it easier to refer to the items listed.

Dr. Davis concluded the discussion by saying he would sketch out a statement of principles of learning and write the guiding principles section by the next meeting.
