To Safely Say

We peer
with blanket covered
         eyes
Lie like the dead
in this bed reside
Seek safety
in passing moments hide
And peer with blanket covered
                   eyes

We tip on toes that tremble
slightly
Hold breath as each step falls lightly
Beneath
we pray
both day and nightly
And tip on toes that tremble
slightly

How long to live
         stuck in this fear
Never knowing just how far
or near
Condemned
and too afraid to leave here
We long to live
         without
this fear
