The Silence of June
Mr. H.T., an 83 year old white male with
Sudden onset of left sided hemiparesis.
Is the lesion located proximal or distal
To the recollection of his mother's perfume?
Pre or post the memory of his first kiss?
Unresponsive, he lies in his hospital bed
A different man from that time
He heard his newborn daughter's cry.
Now she sits at the foot of his bed
A woman with children of her own.
"Can I put his glasses on?" she asks
"He can't see without them, you know."
The click of the air conditioner is the only sound
As I gently pull the blankets around him.
And wonder why hospital rooms always feel so cold.
